  • Textbooks are not available through Interlibrary Loan.
  • Items obtained through Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on Course Reserve.

Copyright and Your Request

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a user makes a request for, or later uses a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use, that user may be liable for copyright infringement. Clarkson University reserves the right to refuse to accept an order if, in its judgement, fullfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Please be sure you are following these Fair Use guidelines if using material for teaching. Look under the section entitled “Exceptions & Limitations”.

Rule of Five
Copyright guidelines permit libraries to request a maximum of 5 articles, published within the last 5 years, from a single journal title, within a one year period.  Should the limit be exceeded, patrons can pay a copyright fee to obtain their article or may resubmit the request the following year. Fees vary depending on the publisher.
