Dr. Erath has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (CBET-2211294), titled “Brave new whorl: Vortex ring impingement on concave surfaces.” Over the next 3 years, this work will explore the mechanics of vortex rings impinging on concave hemispheric and hemicylindrical surfaces. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the fluid loading that arises on the surfaces throughout the interaction. This work has broad application, from energy harvesting to turbulence transition to replacement speech production.
