NSF requires RCER (Responsible Conduct of Ethical Research) training which falls under the overarching RCR (Responsible Conduct of Research) program.
- If awarded an NSF award, RCR training (CITI) should be completed within the first three (3) months on the project.
- RCR training is completed once per award. Training certificate is valid for four (4) years, per CITI guidelines. If the award extends beyond four years, training certificates must be renewed.
- RCR Training satisfies both the NSF and USDA/NIFA RCR Training requirements.
Who must complete this training?
- For NSF Awards: Faculty and other senior personnel, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, and any staff who will be supported by NSF to conduct research. (Effective for new proposals submitted or due on or after 07/31/2023.)
- For NIH Awards: Postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students.
- For USDA-NIFA: Faculty and other senior personnel, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students and any staff participating in the research project for all awards subject to USDA-NIFA.
Principal Investigators
Principal investigators have primary individual responsibility for the conduct and administration of a research grant or contract and must ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and institutional policy governing sponsored research. Accordingly, principal investigators must ensure that those supported on their awards complete RCR training per sponsor requirements. Specifically, principal investigators must:
- identify and communicate with research team members who must receive RCR training;
- determine the most appropriate training format in line with sponsor requirements;
- ensure each research team member completes their training
Once you’ve completed your CITI training and received your certificate please send it to the SRS for our records at: srs@clarkson.edu
