Teachers at a workshop for foodwaste

Ten teachers from 3 school districts attended a professional development workshop on March 22, 2019 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Farm in Canton. Teachers learned about issues related to solid waste, resource recovery, and anaerobic digestion. We explored practical topics such as our current waste disposal practices and the current use of anaerobic digesters for farm and food wastes in St. Lawrence County, as well as the science and theory of anaerobic digestion for recovering energy and fertilizer.

Teachers practiced hands-on science lessons and received materials for their own classroom use. Stipends were provided for teachers who adapted lessons to share

Teachers toured the Extension Farm and the on-site anaerobic digester built and operated by Stefan Grimberg’s research group at Clarkson.
