Explore The Arboretum

Welcome to an interactive experience that connects technology, nature, and learning. Whether you’re walking the trail or exploring from home, you can discover the stories, science, and beauty behind each tree in our arboretum.

Three Ways to Explore

1. Using the Map

  • Open the Arboretum website “Map” page on your device while walking the Munter Trail
  • This map contains markers for each tree, including those without signs
  • Click on a marker to see more information about that tree

💡 Tip: You can also browse all trees on the map if you’re exploring from home!

2. Discover a Species

  • Open the Arboretum website “Species” page on your device
  • This page lists the common name and scientific name for each species in the arboretum
  • Click on any species name to see the tree ID for each tree of that species
  • Click on any tree ID to be brought to the map with that tree highlighted

3. Find a Tree

  • Open the Arboretum website “Find a Tree” page on your device
  • Look for the black tree signs — each includes the tree’s common name, scientific name, and a code
  • Enter the last 4-digits of the code in the search box, and click the “Go!” button
  • This will bring to the map showing the location of the tree
  • Click on the highlighted dot to see a popup window with information about that tree — including:
    • Common and scientific names
    • Species and genus details
    • Tree height, diameter, and estimated age
    • Fun facts and ecological significance

How to Identify a Tree

🌿 Use these clues to help identify trees on your walk:

  • Leaves: shape, size, color, and edge (smooth vs. serrated)
  • Bark: color, texture, and pattern (smooth, ridged, or peeling)
  • Shape: overall silhouette — tall and narrow, broad and spreading, etc
  • Location: soil type, sunlight, and nearby species can give hints
