The lectures, class discussions, films and readings will expose you to the terms and ideas that represent sociological principles, concepts, and perspectives. This section of The Clarkson Seminar focuses on privilege and inequality within intersecting identities (race, class, gender etc.) with a focus on social class. We will be examining both theory and fiction using a sociological lens in which to tease out the complexities of the characters’ lives. It is expected that you will learn the meaning of the terms and ideas as well as how they apply to “real life.” I will devote class time, as well as “office time,” to explaining the material thoroughly. You will be required to demonstrate your understanding of these terms and ideas through texts, presentations, papers and in your homework assignments.
