The Clarkson AI Institute offers scoping, deployment, and advisory services for organizations looking to implement AI responsibly and effectively.

Start with the question, not the technology. Most people who ask us for AI need less than they expect — sometimes a free tool running on their own laptop, sometimes no AI at all. Answer these six questions and we will build you a picture of what you actually need. Then send it to us, and we will tell you honestly what we think.

The route is different inside and outside the University.

2. What are you actually trying to accomplish?

Pick the closest. Describe the nuance in your email later.

3. What kind of data will this touch?

This often decides the answer on its own.

4. How much computing will this really need?

Be honest. Most people overestimate this.

5. What is your budget reality?

“No budget” is a legitimate answer and often changes nothing.

6. How much do you want to run yourselves?

Published Rates

Program support services for NSF REU Sites and comparable undergraduate research training programs. Prices are per Site, per summer cohort. The Institute delivers the service, tracks completion, and provides the PI with the documentation needed for reporting.

Tier A — $2,500 each

RCR + Responsible-AI training module

NSF requires responsible-conduct-of-research training for undergraduates, and the Site solicitation names it explicitly. This is the AI-specific version: data provenance and licensing, disclosure of AI use in writing, model and dataset documentation, bias and evaluation, and dual-use. The Institute delivers it, tracks completion, and hands the PI a roster for the annual report.

Mentor training for graduate students and postdocs

The solicitation asks proposals to describe the training, mentoring, or monitoring that research mentors have received — a section most PIs have nothing to write in. An Entering-Mentoring-style workshop for the people doing the day-to-day mentoring, plus one mid-summer check-in, fills a real reviewer-facing gap.

Data management, archiving, and reproducibility

DMP and DMSP drafting support, end-of-summer code and data deposit with a DOI, and model and dataset cards. Turns the student’s ten weeks into a citable artifact instead of a dead directory.

Scoped per Site within the band above.

AI methods bootcamp — week one

Intensive onboarding: the Python and PyTorch stack, data hygiene, version control, ACRES job submission, and evaluation discipline. Students become productive in week two instead of week six.

Recruitment and applicant pipeline

Sites must draw a significant fraction of students from outside the host institution, with at least half from institutions where STEM research opportunities are limited. The Institute runs a shared application portal, outreach to North Country community colleges and regional PUIs, screening, and reference collection.
