Course Description
This course provides a review and extension of the basic methodology and decisions surrounding design leading to the conceptual and preliminary design of mechanical systems. Topics covered included preliminary sizing, mathematical modeling, experimental evaluation, requirements and constraints, layout, fluid mechanics and thermal sciences issues, structural issues, economics, trade studies, and ethical implications of the design and decision process. The course is supplemented by lectures on various topics including conceptual design issues, detailed system considerations, trade studies, integration, structural issues, computational mechanics, testing considerations, cost, and manufacturing.
