{"id":3082,"date":"2020-05-05T10:29:18","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T14:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-cu-sites.pantheonsite.io\/library\/?page_id=3082"},"modified":"2025-05-16T14:24:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T18:24:58","slug":"executive-branch","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.clarkson.edu\/library\/research-tools-collections\/guides\/constitution-day\/executive-branch\/","title":{"rendered":"Executive Branch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The executive branches makes sure the laws passed by Congress are executed and enforces the laws.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The branch is made up of the President, Vice President, Cabinet, executive departments and the federal agencies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>The President<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The President is the head of state in the United States and Commander-in-Chief of the military.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/interactive-constitution\/articles\/article-ii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Article II&nbsp;<\/a>of the Constitution the President is charged with \u201cexecuting\u201d and enforcing the laws, as passed by Congress. The President signs legislation into law or \u201cvetos\u201d bills, although Congress can override a veto with a 2\/3 vote of both houses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President also appoints the heads of federal agencies judges, and ambassadors, as well as justices of the US Supreme Court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Executive branch is also charged with conducting diplomacy with other countries, including negotiating and signing treaties (which are then ratified by Congress).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President also has the ability to issue executive orders, which direct officers of the executive branch or clarify existing laws. The founding fathers established it in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/federal-register\/electoral-college\/provisions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Constitution<\/a>&nbsp;as a compromise between election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens. The Electoral College process consists of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/federal-register\/electoral-college\/electors.html#selection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selection of the electors<\/a>, the meeting of the electors where they vote for President and Vice President, and the counting of the electoral votes by Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 538 electors, a majority (270) of which is required to elect the president. Your state is allocated electors equal to the number of members of Congress your state has (Senators and House of Representative members). The District of Columbia has three electors.
