The Clarkson University Libraries are hiring student employees for the Fall 2021 – Spring 2022 school year.

Job Descriptions

NOTE: These are generalized job descriptions.  Actual work may differ slightly and include other tasks.

Circulation (Front Desk Service)
  • Check out and check in books, journals, reserve books, study room keys, and other library materials.
  • Sort books for shelving in proper call number order.
  • Answer basic informational, directional and library policy questions.
  • Help library users navigate the online library catalog and electronic databases to find books, articles, and other research resources.
  • Help library users locate materials in the stacks.
  • Provide basic assistance with copying/printing/scanning. Service printers/copiers. 
  • Assist with course reserve processing.
  • Answer phone calls.
  • Assist library users with study room reservations. 
  • Open or close library (specific shifts).
  • Requires effective communication and customer service skills, and ability to work independently. 
Stacks Management (Shelf Maintenance)
  • Gather, sort, shelve, and shift books and journals accurately by call number.
  • Review order of books on the shelves to be sure they are in the right order (shelf-reading).
  • Straighten the shelves of books, update aisle markers as needed, and replace bookends.
  • Identify books needing repair. 
  • Search the stacks for books reported missing or billed for replacement.
  • Requires attention to detail and accuracy.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
  • Process and distribute interlibrary loan and document delivery materials for patron use.
  • Search for and retrieve books and journals from shelves. 
  • Search electronic databases for articles. 
  • Scan print materials (journal articles, book chapters) for electronic lending and borrowing.
  • Prepare and pack books for mailing; unpack incoming items and prepare for circulation.
  • Search and scan documents on microfilm.
  • Process material requests using specialized ILL software.
  • Requires attention to detail and accuracy.
Cataloging (Technical Services)
  • Assist with physical processing of new and donated materials to prepare for shelving. 
  • Search online computer library center for accurate records for items to be added to collection. 
  • Work in detail in library information system. 
  • Assist with processing and intake of theses and dissertations.
  • Process Government Documents (both electronic and paper). 
  • Assist with repair of material.
  • Work closely with other library departments
  • Requires a very detail-oriented person.
Archives 
  • Shelve archival material.
  • Assist with shelf maintenance and records organization.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory of archive collection.
  • Assist with processing, preserving, and digitization (scanning) of archival material. 
  • Assist researchers with locating and handling archive material.
  • Assist with planning and execution of archive exhibits.
Health Sciences Library
  • The Health Sciences Library (HSL) is the primary library for the Physical Therapy (PT), Physician Assistant (PA), and Occupational Therapy (OT) graduate programs and is located on Clarkson’s downtown campus. 
  • HSL Student Assistants help with a wide range of duties, which may include circulation, stacks management, interlibrary loan, and cataloging functions. 

Work Schedule

Students will work a set schedule that is built around library needs and the student’s classes and other commitments.
