{"id":303,"date":"2020-04-16T19:11:54","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T19:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-cu-sites.pantheonsite.io\/gallery\/?page_id=303"},"modified":"2020-08-14T13:42:43","modified_gmt":"2020-08-14T13:42:43","slug":"robert-redbird","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.clarkson.edu\/gallery\/browse-the-artists\/robert-redbird\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Redbird"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Artist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Robert Redbird Sr.<\/strong>&nbsp;(July 22, 1939 \u2013 March 5, 2016) was a Native American artist who painted in order to preserve and communicate the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kiowa\">Kiowa<\/a>&nbsp;culture.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Redbird#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He is known primarily for his blanket-wrapped&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Plains\">Southern Plains<\/a>&nbsp;figures and depiction of Kiowa folklore. Redbird worked in several media but is most well known for having accomplished his works with an airbrush. Oklahoma Governor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brad_Henry\">Brad Henry<\/a>&nbsp;declared June 7, 2003 as &#8220;Robert Redbird Day&#8221; to celebrate the artist&#8217;s many creative and humanitarian achievements.<br>His grandmother was Hispanic, while his grandfather was Kiowa.&nbsp; His grandfather was one of the Kiowa Five, Monroe Tsatoke.&nbsp; Naturally he was inspired to become an artist, as he lived with his grandparents.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>Redbird financially supported a summer camp for handicapped children when he lived in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scottsdale,_Arizona\">Scottsdale, Arizona<\/a>. Redbird sold his paintings for these camps that would take the children on field trips and afford them experiences that they would not have otherwise. The most money he raised for the kids totaled $56,000, with contributions coming from all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redbird worked in many different capacities in his life. He has worked as a welder, mechanic, auto body repairman &amp; painter, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pentecostal\">Pentecostal<\/a>&nbsp;minister, a gospel singer, commercial artist, lecturer, and painter.
