{"id":68,"date":"2022-03-29T15:09:26","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T15:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-cu-sites.pantheonsite.io\/dragon-boat\/?page_id=68"},"modified":"2026-04-13T13:49:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T13:49:26","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.clarkson.edu\/dragon-boat\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-dragon-boat-racing-4aeedfa8-2238-40aa-b0e1-e83d6fae8e91\">What is Dragon Boat Racing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dragon boat racing has been dated to the Warring States Period (402-221 BC) in China when a patriotic poet, Qu Yaun, drowned himself in the Milou River out of sorrow when a corrupt king had destroyed his court.  Beloved by his people, they&nbsp;raced their boats in search of his body in an attempt to save him.&nbsp;&nbsp;In order to commemorate Qu Yuan, this practice continues today&nbsp;and&nbsp;traditionally occurs on the 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;day of the 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Lunar Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dragon Boat Racing is now one of the fastest growing watersports in North America and is an internationally recognized sport.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is currently practiced in more than 50 countries and there are an estimated 50 million active dragon boat paddlers in the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;Become one of them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Standard Crew consists of 22 team members:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drummer: (1)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pulsation of the beat of the drum is considered the \u201cheartbeat\u201d of the dragon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engages synchronization of all of the paddlers strokes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Issues commands to the crew through hand signals or voice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paddlers: (20)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 Pairs sit facing forward in the direction of boat movement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pacers (first pair) set the pace for the team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steerer: (1)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Controls the direction of the boat\u2019s movement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stands in the back of the boat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Person who calls the demands for paddlers to better their placement and time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a measure of strength, but rather a measure of teamwork and true grit.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teams are encouraged incorporate both genders, in fact there is a small time penalty for an all male team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7
