The Neuroscience of Drug Use and Addiction
In this 5-week interactive summer camp students learn about the effects of drug use and addiction on the human brain through lab activities, working with health care professionals, and studying brain science.
The curriculum covers:
- Addiction treatment approaches, and how they relate to the theories of addiction.
- The incidence of drug use and substance use disorders.
- The psychological, social and biological reasons people use drugs
- The three main theories of addiction: Pleasure; Withdrawal Avoidance, and the Incentive Sensitization Theories.
The Camp is very interactive. Students are given the opportunity to work in small groups exploring the topics and learn how the basic science of drug use and addiction is related to addiction treatments. The Summer Camp also includes a number of interesting activities, such as hearing from health care professionals who treat individuals who are addicted to drugs, and field trips to addiction treatment clinics.
